In Theydon Bois, Essex, our clients wanted to make better use of their garden by creating a dedicated space for their gym equipment. The brief was to create a dedicated garden gym where the clients could enjoy the convenience of exercising at home. With 14.4sqm of internal space, the garden room provides a generous area for gym equipment while maintaining a comfortable and open feel.

Moving the gym outside the main house creates a clear separation between home and exercise, giving the clients a private space where they can focus on their training without the distractions of a traditional home gym.

The room has also been designed with flexibility in mind, meaning it can continue to evolve alongside the clients’ fitness requirements.

Modern Materials, Contrasting Finishes

The exterior brings together several of Hawksbeck’s signature contemporary finishes to create a clean and architectural look.

The building features vertical cedar cladding, bringing a natural element and subtle texture to the exterior. This is contrasted with horizontal black Hardie cladding, creating a distinctive two-tone finish that gives the garden room plenty of visual interest.

The combination of natural timber and dark cladding works particularly well against the garden setting, while the crisp detailing of the Modern Range keeps the overall appearance clean and contemporary.

A Statement 450mm Overhang

One of the defining features of this garden room is its substantial 450mm overhang. The extended roofline gives the building a strong architectural presence and adds depth to the exterior design.

As well as enhancing the appearance of the building, the overhang helps create a sheltered transition around the entrance, reinforcing the feeling that the garden room has been carefully designed as part of the wider garden rather than simply placed within it.

The three-pane anthracite grey bi-fold doors are a standout feature of the design. Their generous glazed area floods the gym with natural light, helping to create a bright and motivating environment for exercise.
