When our client, Aly, owner of Garden Room Flowers, approached Hawksbeck Garden Rooms, she had a clear vision: to create a beautiful, inspiring space within her garden that could support her growing floristry business while also providing a peaceful retreat. Aly specialises in floral workshops, bespoke wedding flowers, celebration arrangements and funeral tributes, so the new 33sqm Signature garden room needed to function as a dedicated flower studio, a welcoming space to host clients and workshops, and somewhere to relax away from work.

The key challenge was creating a structure that felt like a natural extension of the garden rather than a separate building. The design needed to complement the existing landscape while providing a practical, high-quality workspace that could adapt seamlessly to both business and personal use.

A Garden Room Designed Around Nature

The relationship between the garden room and its surroundings was central to the design process. Large aluminium sliding doors and expansive windows were incorporated to create a strong connection between the interior and exterior spaces, allowing natural light to flood the studio and providing views directly into the garden.

This indoor-outdoor connection was essential for our client, helping the studio feel open, calming and closely linked to the changing seasons. Whether arranging flowers, hosting a workshop or enjoying the space privately, the garden remains an integral part of the experience.

A Unique Material Palette

To complement the natural setting, the garden room features a carefully selected combination of materials, textures and finishes. The external walls combine vertical Kebony timber cladding with horizontal Hardie Board panels, creating a contemporary yet timeless appearance. Kebony timber was chosen for its durability, natural character and ability to weather beautifully over time, helping the building sit comfortably within its garden environment. The vertical Kebony timber also continues onto the bespoke timber entrance door, creating a seamless and refined finish that enhances the overall design.

A standout feature of the garden room is the use of charred Kebony Radiata timber, which adds depth, texture and a distinctive architectural quality. The dark tones contrast beautifully with the surrounding greenery while giving the building a sophisticated, handcrafted feel.

Bespoke Detailing and Architect Collaboration

Attention to detail was crucial in achieving the high-end finish our client wanted. The garden room incorporates bespoke Corten steel parapet roof detailing, adding a striking architectural element while providing a durable and visually interesting finish.

To achieve this specialist metalwork, Hawksbeck worked in partnership with Felix Lewis Architects, who assisted with the design and detailing of the metalwork fascia elements. This collaboration ensured every aspect of the garden room was carefully considered, from the overall structure through to the smallest finishing details.

A Flexible Space for Creativity

The completed garden room provides a versatile environment that supports both creativity and business. As a flower studio, it offers a dedicated workspace where arrangements can be created and workshops can take place. The generous glazing and thoughtful layout provide a bright and welcoming atmosphere for hosting clients and teaching classes.

Outside of work, the space also functions as a private garden retreat: a place to relax, enjoy the surroundings and make the most of the garden throughout the year. This Hawksbeck Garden Room demonstrates how a carefully designed outdoor space can transform the way a property is used. By combining architectural design, premium materials and a strong connection to nature, we created a bespoke studio that is not only functional but also a beautiful addition to the garden.
