For this Hawksbeck project, the brief was simple: create a dedicated home gym that could also double as an office when needed. The result is a 21sqm garden room in Richmord from the classic range; a beautifully considered space that brings together fitness, work and everyday life in one private retreat at the bottom of the garden.

Designed primarily as a home gym, the garden room provides a dedicated space to train without the need to travel to a gym or compromise on valuable space inside the house. When work calls, the room can effortlessly transition into a comfortable home office, making it a genuinely versatile addition to the property.

A Considered Exterior

The exterior combines a mix of natural and contemporary materials to create a sophisticated garden building that sits comfortably within its surroundings.

Cedar cladding was chosen for the front elevation, bringing warmth and natural texture to the design. The remaining elevations are finished in Hardie Board, providing a crisp, contemporary contrast while creating a durable, low-maintenance exterior.

At the top of the building, a sedum roof adds another layer of natural character. The living roof helps the garden room blend beautifully into its surroundings, creating a softer, greener view from the house and garden.

Bringing the Garden in

One of the defining features of the space is the set of aluminium Crittall-style triple-pane sliding doors. Their slim profiles and generous glazing allow plenty of natural light into the room while creating a strong visual connection with the garden.

For a gym, this makes a real difference. Rather than feeling enclosed, the space feels bright, open and connected to the outdoors, which makes workouts a more enjoyable part of the day.

The doors also make the room feel equally suited to its secondary role as an office. When it’s time to focus, the garden provides a calm backdrop away from the distractions of the main house.
