Returning to Abridge, Essex

Five years ago, Hawksbeck completed the first garden room for these homeowners in Abridge, Essex which was a dedicated home gym designed to create a practical and private space for exercise.

Having made the most of their original garden room, the homeowners came back to Hawksbeck with a new project and a very different brief: a second garden room designed around relaxing, entertaining and music.

From home gym to entertainment space

The new 32sqm garden room serves a completely different purpose from the original gym. Rather than focusing on fitness, this space has been designed as a versatile room for spending time with friends and family. With a sofa, table and chairs, it provides comfortable areas for relaxing and socialising, while still leaving plenty of room for the homeowners’ main feature – their DJ setup.

A dedicated space for music

At the heart of the room is a dedicated DJ desk, fully equipped with decks. This gives the homeowners a purpose-built space to enjoy their music and DJing, while adding a unique character to the garden room. Combined with the lounge and dining areas, the DJ setup makes the room ideal for entertaining, whether that’s a relaxed gathering or an evening spent listening to and playing music.

32sqm of flexible space

With 32sqm of internal space, the garden room offers plenty of flexibility. The open-plan layout allows the different areas to work naturally alongside one another, creating a room that can adapt depending on how it is being used. The result is a space that feels less like a traditional garden office and more like a private destination within the garden which has been designed specifically around the homeowners’ lifestyle.

Hardie board cladding

Externally, the garden room has been finished with Hardie board cladding. The contemporary cladding gives the building a clean, modern appearance and complements the overall design, helping the new structure sit comfortably within the existing garden.

French doors and picture window

Natural light was an important part of the design. The garden room features uPVC French doors and a picture window, helping to create a bright and welcoming interior while maintaining a strong connection with the garden.

The French doors also provide easy access outside, making it simple to move between the garden room and the garden when entertaining.

A second Hawksbeck project

For Hawksbeck, returning to the same property five years after completing the original gym was particularly rewarding. The two garden rooms demonstrate how the same homeowners can use garden buildings for completely different purposes. The first created a dedicated space for fitness; the second provides somewhere to relax, entertain and enjoy music.

Designed around how they live

This second garden room is a great example of creating a space around the things that matter to the homeowner. With 32sqm of versatile space, comfortable seating, dining facilities and a fully equipped DJ setup, it provides a dedicated place to switch off, socialise and enjoy music, all just steps from the main house.

After completing their first garden room gym five years ago, we’re delighted to have returned to Abridge to create another Hawksbeck space that is just as personal, but with a completely different purpose.
